LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

ALCOHOL

The Scottish Government's continuing campaign to cut our nation's alcohol consumption is to be applauded.

However, there is one simple step that could be taken which would undoubtedly help pub customers to realise how much they are consuming - that is the restoration of traditional measures for the dispense of spirits. With quarter gills, fifth gills and (mainly, it has to be said, in Aberdeen) sixth gills, people knew exactly what they were getting. It can be no co-incidence that the rise of problem drinking amongst both young and old in Scotland has entirely followed Metrication of pub measures.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas

  1. Entertaining, but regrettably nonsensical. People know exactly what they're getting with metric measures as well: they're getting either 25ml or 35ml of spirits.
