Dear Sir/Madam,

ROYALS MUST BELT UP

All the images I have seen of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, seem to indicate that neither were wearing seatbelts in the back of the Rolls Royce which got caught up in the recent London riots.

If this is indeed the case, it is sad that Prince Charles has learned nothing from the tragic road accident which killed his first wife and of which the sole survivor was the only person involved to wear a seatbelt!

I trust that the Metropolitan Police will take a few moments off from their pursuit of those who damaged the vehicle and demonstrate, by bringing criminal charges if justified by the facts, that our future King and his wife are not above the law .

I am sure that it is what Diana would have wanted.

Dear Sir/Madam,

MILITARY CHARGE

I was shocked to learn that one of the factors getting in the way of the British Army clearing snow from the streets of Edinburgh is that the local Council would be asked to pay for their deployment.

When the peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq have benefited from the services of our military at no charge to themselves, I do not see why UK taxpayers in our hour of need should not benefit similarly.

Dear Sir/Madam,

SNOW REAL

The almost complete stoppage of national life occasioned by the current spattering of snow is scarcely believable. When I was a child, our schools were kept open by every janitor, able bodied teacher and even the school dinner ladies being set to the task of digging out the playground with old fashioned shovels. The same "all hands to the deck" attitude applied to airports where the General Manager was to be seen setting an example with his spade alongside ground and cabin staff as well as pilots and navigators as they fought to keep runways clear.

Not only are we now far too reliant on often inadequate and unreliable mechanical means of snow removal, but the EU mandated adoption of the SI system of units has brought a touch of fatalism to how Britons regard low temperatures. O degrees Celsius is now seen as a sign that civilisation as we know it must be temporarily suspended whereas 32 degrees Fahrenheit never had that effect!

Dear Sir/Madam,

WIND OF CHANGE

It was gratifying to note that South Africa (whose Constitution protects homosexuals) was moved to support the United Nations vote this week to remove sexual orientation from a resolution calling on countries to protect the life of all people and to investigate extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions that are motivated by prejudice and discrimination.

It would seem that South African politicians have finally realised that appeasing the homosexualist lobby and accepting this perversion has led to many of the current fractures and ills in their society. In addition to removing favourable treatment for homosexuals from their Constitution, perhaps they will now also get round to reversing their 1961 adoption of Decimal Currency which most right thinking people see as the start of the slippery slope to untramelled liberalism.

Dear Sir/Madam,

ROYAL WEDDING

I was delighted to hear today of the impending nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. As a future King and head of his faith, I am sure that the Prince is aware of his responsibility as an upholder of that faith and that both he and Ms Middleton will be virgins on their wedding night.

This fine, upstanding and chaste young man is such a contrast to his tawdry father whose adulterous antics with Camilla Parker Bowles would, in a more moral age, have rendered him unfit to be King.

I am sure that many serving and ex-military personnel will take offence at the action of Celtic Football Club in seeking to ban from their ground those who expressed a negative opinion towards the Poppy Appeal and the UK's armed forces.

My father fought two World Wars in order to allow people to be free to express themselves. Were he still alive, I'm sure that he would take on Celtic FC too!

Dear Sir/Madam,

POLICING FOR THE NEW ORDER

The ConDem government has taken leave of its senses by intending to significantly cut expenditure on policing.

Do they not realise that a much thicker "thin blue line" will be needed to keep the lid on all the social unrest and crime caused by the high unemployment levels which will be a natural consequence of their other policies? This is something that Mrs Thatcher well understood.

Policing costs can be better contained by instructing forces to eschew expensive and prestigious enquiries into historic crimes which all too often result only in the conviction of those, such as Peter Tobin, who are already rightly incarcerated for life.

Dear Sir/Madam,

DON'T WASTE FOOD

I was most upset to read in the Edinburgh Evening News today about the Red River Hog piglets at Edinburgh Zoo which were culled as they were "surplus to requirements". The Zoo's spokesperson described them as having been "euthanised" which of course means that they could not legally enter the human food chain.

It would have been much better if they had been sent for humane slaughter and then fed to staff and visitors - and especially good for the education of the Zoo's younger visitors who so rarely get to make a tangible connection between animal and bacon sandwich in these days of pre-packaged supermarket fayre.

Your report stated that more pigs were likely to be culled by the Zoo so I hope that I will soon be able to enjoy home reared pork in the Zoo's own Mansion House restaurant (when it re-opens).

TURNHOUSE FLIGHT OF FANCY

If BAA has to sell off Edinburgh Airport as a result of the Competition Commission's ruling, this would be the perfect time for Edinburgh Council to buy it. Municipal ownership and operation of the airport (combined in an holistic manner with that of the trams and buses that serve it) could lead to considerable benefits accruing to Edinburgh's citizens.

At the very least, there would be only one body to complain to about any perceived deficiencies in operation!

TRUMPED

Donald Trump seems to think that he has public support in Scotland because few people turned up at Robert Gordon University to protest against the honorary degree which was bestowed upon him.

In fact, most Scots realise that a "Doctorate" from this jumped up former technical college and pretend university is about what he deserves. Unfortunately, the Good Doctor seems to have neither the common gumption nor the cultural sensitivity to be aware of the subtlety of the insult.

MORAL BAR TO LEADERSHIP

Moral standards in New Labour have slipped considerably if they are able to elect as Leader a man who has unrepentedly sired a son out of wedlock with another child on the way.

Ed Miliband claims that he and the mother of his children "have not got round to marrying yet". At a time when even the homosexuals are clamouring to be allowed access to the institution of marriage, the electorate will never accept him as Prime Minister if he treats it in such an offhand way (not to mention inflicting the mark of the bastard on his unfortunate offspring).

I'm glad to see that the American pastor who intended to burn the Koran has suspended his plans.

TIME FOR A BLESSING?

The Edinburgh Tram Scheme has been beset with so many problems of late that I have even heard it described as "God forsaken".

Now that it has been decided to move (at not inconsiderable expense) the tram currently on display in Princes Street so that the "Popemobile" might not be obscured, perhaps the Holy Father could be persuaded to pause for a few moments and bless the tram and its rails.

It certainly could do no harm and his blessing could well help to restore peace and harmony to the relationship between the tramway's promoters and contractors thus promoting an early opening of the line.

Dear Sir/Madam,

PROHIBITION - NOT MINIMUM PRICING

I have just returned from the Campaign for Real Ale's annual Great British Beer Festival in London to which I was invited in order to see "responsible drinking" being undertaken.

This disgusting experience merely confirmed that making alcohol expensive is not any kind of answer. It cost £10 for admission and another £3 to obtain a glass before a single drop could be sampled. Yet, I could see considerable numbers of people whose consumption had been such that they would not have been legally (and, in several cases, physically) capable of driving a motor vehicle.

Only complete prohibition can save the health and morality of our nation.

ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP?

The homosexualist lobby will no doubt be rejoicing at reports that openly gay cleric Dr Jeffrey John, the Dean of St Albans, is the favoured candidate for appointment as Bishop of Southwark.

However, I wonder what their view is on the fact that although Dr John entered a Civil Partnership with his long term partner the Rev Grant Holmes in 2006, he claims that their's is a celibate relationship. Surely gay Christians should be railing against this abuse of the Holy Institution of Civil Partnership? Or are they, like the rest of us, merely incredulous?

Campaigners demanding that the Pope apologise for Priests having sex with children are well meaning but misguided.

My childhood experiences of sexual attention from both Clerics and Scout Leaders totally put me off homosexuality and I am thankful for their early aversion therapy saving me from a lifetime of disgusting and immoral practices which I might otherwise have found attractive.

It can be no co-incidence that the burgeoning of homosexuality amongst adults has followed directly on from the introduction of child protection measures. Perhaps the traditional practices of the Catholic Church have much to commend themselves.

I can assure her that many decent, intelligent and well educated people of my acquaintance consider that a well paid career as a sex worker is infinitely preferable to the tedium of cleaning lavatories, flipping hamburgers or, worse, exposing oneself to public derision as an expenses-claiming know-it-all politician.

On the other hand, if her proposals do become law, I suppose that many of her parliamentary colleagues will expect to get for nothing that for which they currently pay.

Dear Sir/Madam,

THE REAL COST OF ROAMING

The Ministry of Defence is to be applauded for embarking on the first steps to privatisation of RAF and Navy rescue services.

For far too long, people (most of them city dwellers) have been straying off our extensive network of paved roads in order to experience what they perceive to be the thrills of the countryside. Unfortunately, taxpayers are then expected, through the military budget, to pay for the inevitable rescues when they fall over a cliff, get stuck up a mountain or stub their big toe.

It is high time that these selfish individuals should have to pay for the full cost of their recovery and this privatisation means that day becomes ever closer.

Dear Sir/Madam,

WHIPPING BOYS

I have been disgusted at the vindictive and vengeful public outcry following the sentencing of the two young brothers from Edlington to a minimum of five years for grievous bodily harm against two children of similar age. In our modern liberal and caring society, capital punishment or "feeding them to the paedophiles" is surely not an option.

These young people are victims of the failures of others and need caring support rather than a good whipping.

As Mary Bell (who murdered Martin Brown and Brian Howe) and Robert Thompson and Jon Venables (murderers of Thomas Bulger) have shown, it is possible for "toxic" youngsters to turn out as responsible and valuable members of society, leading a normal and productive life as well as being able to raise their own children in happier circumstances.

We should condemn a little less and care a little more.

It has been most gratifying to see the resolute way in which the BBC and other media have used the Celsius temperature scale in covering the current inclement weather to the exclusion of degrees Fahrenheit.
