Dear Sir/Madam,

POLICING FOR THE NEW ORDER

The ConDem government has taken leave of its senses by intending to significantly cut expenditure on policing.

Do they not realise that a much thicker "thin blue line" will be needed to keep the lid on all the social unrest and crime caused by the high unemployment levels which will be a natural consequence of their other policies? This is something that Mrs Thatcher well understood.

Policing costs can be better contained by instructing forces to eschew expensive and prestigious enquiries into historic crimes which all too often result only in the conviction of those, such as Peter Tobin, who are already rightly incarcerated for life.

Dear Sir/Madam,

DON'T WASTE FOOD

I was most upset to read in the Edinburgh Evening News today about the Red River Hog piglets at Edinburgh Zoo which were culled as they were "surplus to requirements". The Zoo's spokesperson described them as having been "euthanised" which of course means that they could not legally enter the human food chain.

It would have been much better if they had been sent for humane slaughter and then fed to staff and visitors - and especially good for the education of the Zoo's younger visitors who so rarely get to make a tangible connection between animal and bacon sandwich in these days of pre-packaged supermarket fayre.

Your report stated that more pigs were likely to be culled by the Zoo so I hope that I will soon be able to enjoy home reared pork in the Zoo's own Mansion House restaurant (when it re-opens).

Dear Sir/Madam,

TURNHOUSE FLIGHT OF FANCY

If BAA has to sell off Edinburgh Airport as a result of the Competition Commission's ruling, this would be the perfect time for Edinburgh Council to buy it. Municipal ownership and operation of the airport (combined in an holistic manner with that of the trams and buses that serve it) could lead to considerable benefits accruing to Edinburgh's citizens.

At the very least, there would be only one body to complain to about any perceived deficiencies in operation!

Dear Sir/Madam,

TRUMPED

Donald Trump seems to think that he has public support in Scotland because few people turned up at Robert Gordon University to protest against the honorary degree which was bestowed upon him.

In fact, most Scots realise that a "Doctorate" from this jumped up former technical college and pretend university is about what he deserves. Unfortunately, the Good Doctor seems to have neither the common gumption nor the cultural sensitivity to be aware of the subtlety of the insult.
