LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

CONSEQUENCES OF POLICE SEARCHES

Scottish justice secretary, Kenny MacAskill, complains that British Transport Police (BTP) have been searching an unduly high proportion of Asian travellers. In fact, a friend who is a BTP officer, informs me that their target is Asian travellers but that they have been told to search large numbers of non-Asian travellers at random in order to try and make this less obvious.

What most people who have been the subject of such a search under terror related legislation fail to realise is that not only has their search been recorded by the police but as a result, they are no longer eligible to enter the USA under the Visa Waiver Scheme and that they will henceforth have to apply for a visa if they wish to visit that country.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
