LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

I'm glad that Glasgow Council is taking steps to close the open wound that is Paddy's Market. It is only by getting rid of anachronistic institutions that cater largely for the working classes that our cities can be improved and made fit for the New Century and the challenges of modern mass tourism.

In Edinburgh, we have to thank the otherwise much criticised tram scheme for the closure of many tatty old shops in Leith Walk. These will soon be replaced by upmarket boutiques and coffee shops whilst the working classes will be far happier and get more exercise travelling out to peripheral trading estates in order to purchase their hardwear and other requisites.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
