LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

I was sorry to read in today's Evening News about the teenage pupil at Merchiston Castle School who suffered an horrific spinal injury during a rugby match.

It really is time that the Scottish Government moved to protect our young people by banning dangerous sports of this sort in both public and private schools.

Whilst the 17 year old injured in this case is a young adult and able to make his own decisions, many younger people are forced into these dangerous sports through parental and peer pressures - not to mention the blinkered approach of PE teachers.

As your report showed, these sort of injuries are not exactly uncommon, and if a ban were to save just one child from being permanently disabled, I am sure it would be worth it.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
