LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

I had always understood that the Roman Catholic Church would give Holy Communion to members who had repented of their sins by confessing them to a priest. I have several Catholic friends who describe themselves as serial sinners but regularly go to confession to make themselves "right with God".

What then is so special about politicians who have voted in favour of permitting women to have abortions that Cardinal Keith O'Brien would deny them Holy Communion for all time? Are they not to be permitted the opportunity to repent? After all, serial murderers regularly receive the Sacraments of the Church in our gaols as do priests who have been convicted of sexual offences against children.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
