LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir,

SCHOOLS

I fail to see why the Scottish Government is trying to reduce primary school class sizes at the cost of untold millions of pounds of taxpayers' money.

Instead, they should be utilising the talents of our few competent teachers by encouraging them to teach larger classes and remunerating them appropriately. They could then get rid of the bulk of glorified child minders who bedevil the profession - many of them scarcely literate themselves.

Class sizes keep falling, but children leave school with standards of numeracy and literacy which would never have been tolerated by the dedicated and talented teachers who taught composite classes of 40+ when I was at school a similar number of years ago.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
