Dear Sir/Madam,

SETTING AN EXAMPLE

I was fascinated to read the item anent setted streets in the most recent Spurtle ( http://www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/sites/broughtonspurtle.org.uk/files/backissues/Spurtle%20259%20Final.pdf ).

What neither Edinburgh Council nor LCCC mention is the major contribution to road safety made by this traditional road surfacing which forces the operators of pedal cycles to moderate their speed and progress with more care (especially in inclement weather).

The Council should return many more of Edinburgh's roads to setts as anything which tackles the plague of inconsiderate pedalists would be beneficial to pedestrians and motor vehicle users alike. Perhaps this could be done to Leith Walk as part of the Tram extension?

  1. Might you not be concerned at the prospect of the sensation of cycling on such a surface giving unduly inappropriate pleasurable thoughts to the cyclists in question? Edinburgh has a reputation to live up to, after all.
