Dear Sir/Madam,
HOME RULE NEEDED ON ALCOHOL
The Scottish Government's plan to discourage drinking by raising prices, whilst to be welcomed, is somewhat ill thought out in that it does nothing to protect the poor from resorting to the manufacture of alcohol at home as an alternative.
Using cheap household ingredients and inexpensive equipment readily available from otherwise respectable retailers, alcohol can easily and legally be made for little more than the price of lemonade. Not only is home brewing and winemaking currently totally uncontrolled, but it cheats the Exchequer of revenue which could otherwise be used to treat the deleterious effects of alcohol.
If the SNP's "War on Alcohol" is to be taken seriously, they really must do something to control this dangerous process which was, after all, only made legal in the 1960's.
Sincerely,
John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,
EMPLOYMENT
It's always amusing to see the high and mighty hoist by their own petard. But at least Baroness Scotland had the decency not to take the informal advice recently given to me by a member of staff in the Department of Employment: "Don't employ blacks or people with foreign accents - it's just not worth the paperwork"!
Sincerely,

Dear Sir/Madam,
Why has the Scottish Government chosen to abandon the Glasgow airport rail link which would be of lasting benefit to the people of Scotland whilst still proposing to squander money on mere public entertainment in the shape of the 2014 Commonwealth Games?
In the light of their continuing War on Alcohol, is this the modern equivalent of Beer and Circuses?
Sincerely,
John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,
FIREWORKS
As a ticket holder for the Edinburgh Festival Fireworks, it was pleasant this year not to have to struggle through crowds to get in and out of the Gardens.
I presume that the banishment of the hoi polloi from Princes Street will also occur next year as there seems little prospect of the tram works being finished by then.
Sincerely,
John Eoin Douglas
