Dear Sir,

CAB ARRAY

I am sorry to hear that taxi driver A Bain (Letters - 18th Feb) is, like most business people, suffering from a downturn in trade.

Nevertheless, his attack on the "illegal" private hire trade is a bit self serving and I'll warrant that his demand that "we need a new form of "taxi police" on the streets to make sure the public are safe" is more predicated on protecting his own monopoly than anything else.

Ultimately, members of the public are perfectly capable of evaluating the safety record of different types of transport and, if they don't want to walk an extra 100 yards to use his cab, then tough!
