BISHOP SHOULD DISCUSS UGANDA
It has been most gratifying to see the alacrity with which the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has criticised the election of Rev Mary Glasspool as the second openly gay bishop in the global Anglican Church. Quite apart from the vexed issue of women serving in this role, the appointment of a lesbian opens the Church to public ridicule not to mention the displeasure of God.
However, I am surprised that he has so far had nothing to say about the backing of many senior church people in Uganda for legislation which will introduce the death penalty for homosexuals. Whilst I would be the first to discourage such immorality, execution is surely going too far and chemical castration might be kinder and certainly more Christian.

Dear Sir/Madam,
STRONG DRINK
The Portman Group is absolutely right but totally hypocritical in calling for Fraserburgh-based BrewDog's Tokyo Beer to be banned. Portman claims that excessive drinking is being encouraged because the labelling for this 18.2% ABV libation states that people must, from time to time, have excess, and adds: "This beer is for those times."
But when will we hear Portman attack the major players in the industry who make far stronger alcoholic beverages than this small brewery? Portman is financed by massive alcohol companies the sheer scale of whose manufacture of this toxic and harmful drug causes more misery than a tiny production run of some tar flavoured beverage sold to a small handful of incorrigible beardie weardie real ale addicts will ever do.

SWISS CHEESED OFF
It is most unfair that the people of Switzerland have been characterised as racist and/or Islamophobic following their vote to ban any further erection of minarets in their country.
My Swiss friends tell me that the decision (notwithstanding the regretable remarks made by a few of their more bigoted and ignorant politicians) has nothing to do with any animus towards Islam. Rather, it is a result of the deeply conservative views that many of the Swiss hold on the subject of architecture.

Dear Sir/Madam,
NEW SMOKING BAN
Walking past a bus stop in Edinburgh this evening, I was delighted to see that the tram roadworks had sprouted "No Smoking" signs. It's good to see TIE's contractors attempting to improve public health in this way although I wasn't aware that they had been given statutory powers to enforce such a ban.
The mass closure of pubs has been the predictable effect of the Scottish Government's smoking ban - something which I happen to applaud as an anti-alcohol campaigner. Perhaps this new edict will lead to the cancellation of the tram scheme as Auld Reekie's tobacco addicts abandon the streets in order to satisfy their cravings in the privacy of their own homes.

Why on earth has Gordon Brown seen fit to apologise to Jacqui Janes over the letter of condolence which he sent to her following her son's death in Afganistan?
This ungrateful woman seems not to realise that our Prime Minister is a busy man and that she was honoured by his taking time to hand write a personal note rather than letting secretarial staff prepare a standard letter for signature as was undoubtedly done by her other correspondents: Prince Philip, Buckingham Palace, the Defence Secretary and the dead soldier's regiment.

Now that the Euro and Sterling are effectively worth the same, what better time for monetary union?
In these times of economic turmoil, it shouldn't be difficult to persuade the people of Europe to abandon the modern Euro in favour of our historic Pound.

IN BAD COMPANY
There seems to be much self-congratulation amongst Northern Ireland's politicians over the pending deal between the DUP and Sinn Fein which could see Stormont take over the running of police, prisons and the courts.
Strange then that there has been a resounding silence at the recent abolition of Northern Ireland's distinctive company law and the transfer of control of the Belfast Companies Registry to Cardiff.
Do Northern Ireland's political classes have no interest in managing these vital functions of state? Or are they too busy winning hearts and minds?
