Dear Sir/Madam,

SPORT IS A DRUG

If a recreational drug, having been taken by 14,000 people on but one occasion, resulted in 1 death and 15 hospitalisations with over 150 requiring the attention of paramedics, the press and public would quite rightly be seeking for it to be made illegal.

Yet I hear no such clamour anent the Edinburgh Marathon which achieved the same dismal record of pain and injury whilst making our city virtually impassable to the non sportive majority.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,

CATHOLIC TRUTH

Campaigners demanding that the Pope apologise for Priests having sex with children are well meaning but misguided.

My childhood experiences of sexual attention from both Clerics and Scout Leaders totally put me off homosexuality and I am thankful for their early aversion therapy saving me from a lifetime of disgusting and immoral practices which I might otherwise have found attractive.

It can be no co-incidence that the burgeoning of homosexuality amongst adults has followed directly on from the introduction of child protection measures. Perhaps the traditional practices of the Catholic Church have much to commend themselves.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,

DON'T OFFEND THE BANKING COMMUNITY

UK Business Secretary Peter Mandelson really should have thought twice before branding Barclays Bank President Bob Diamond as the "Unacceptable Face of Banking" over his alleged £63m pay award.

The Banking Community have long memories and Lord Mandelson's criticism of a such a well respected banker will do him few favours were he ever again to seek to arrange a mortgage with a UK banking institution.

Dear Sir/Madam,

GARDENING WOES

As a keen gardener, I am most annoyed that the Government intends to ban the plant food Mephedrone because a handful of people are claimed to have suffered ill health or death after misusing it as a drug of intoxication.

Will I become a criminal if I stock up on it before the ban? Or will my azaleas have to suffer because of a Nanny State attitude towards the lack of self control of a few selfish drug-taking individuals who will stop at nothing to alter their state of consciousness?

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,

DON'T RISK LOSING CIVIL SERVANTS

The Government was absolutely right to allow the payment of large bonuses to bankers at our state owned banks in order to dissuade them from resigning and taking up better remunerated employment in foreign climes.

Why is the Prime Minister now risking a similar exodus of our senior civil servants by imposing a freeze on their pay at a time when we most need their experience and wise counsel?

Dear Sir/Madam,

TRISH SHOULDN'T TRASH PROSTITUTION

It is apalling that Labour MSP Trish Godman has tabled a string of amendments to the Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill currently going through the Scottish Parliament to make it an offence to engage in, advertise or facilitate paid-for sexual activity.

I can assure her that many decent, intelligent and well educated people of my acquaintance consider that a well paid career as a sex worker is infinitely preferable to the tedium of cleaning lavatories, flipping hamburgers or, worse, exposing oneself to public derision as an expenses-claiming know-it-all politician.

On the other hand, if her proposals do become law, I suppose that many of her parliamentary colleagues will expect to get for nothing that for which they currently pay.

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas

Dear Sir/Madam,

UNFAIR TO ATHEISTS

Once again the government is to give special treatment to organised religions by allowing faith schools in England to tailor their sex education lessons to their own beliefs.

Why should atheist parents who wish their children to be taught that homosexuality is an abominable life choice be forced to send their children to faith schools with the real risk that they have their minds polluted by some of the more undesireable teachings of these faiths?

Sincerely,

John Eoin Douglas
